Hello 5th grade stars!

I hope you've all had a fabulous, restful, and enriching summer. Are you ready to begin middle school this fall? I know you'll all do well! I wanted to let you know about an unexpected visitor that stopped by my classroom the other day while I was preparing for the new school year. The visitor was furry, and enjoyed sniffing about the classroom. Here's a picture of him in the classroom library. Yep, it's Rowdy! He loves the new classroom and told me to wish you all luck in 6th grade! Go get 'em!

"WOW!" "WATCH OUT JESSIE! YOU ARE ABOUT TO GET JABBED IN THE BACK BY THE OTHER FENCING TEAM! OOPS! TO LATE SORRY!" WHY DID YOU DO THAT JAMES? I HAD HIM!" I ignored him because all my attention was on Nickolas, Jessie's twin bro. He was standing at the end of the fencing ring. But in a blink of an eye he lunged his sword at me! I blocked it. Then he went for my leg.I missed the block and he hit me! And I was out of the game for a year...

...ONE YEAR LATTER...

I was walking to the fencing ring hoping to beat Nickolas (unlike the last time.) but I know I can do it because I've been practicing all year long, I've improved my strength to. So as I walked in to the ring I found out who my first opponent was, and if you were thinking Nickolas you were correct it was him. but no one was cheering for me which really got me down. as he was going in for the kill, I saw my sister Taylor and Jessie starting to cheer for me! That perked me up so much I gave Nickolas a upper cut, and jabbed him in the stomach! But my strand of luck was over because Nickolas commanded his team to attack me! But at that moment Taylor and Jessie came to my aid. So we picked them off one by one, well that made nick mad and he lunged his sword at me I got the block and hit him!! I was a new champion and a great fighter.

I'm writing about how people make pitbulls fight. It is wrong! There is no reason for it. One people take avantage of pitbulls because people know that they are protective dogs. It is against the law but people still do it and sometimes it kills pitbulls and they can't do any thing about it. When people are fighting pitbulls they either get injured bad or sometimes even killed and the owners don't even care at all. If I had the right I would only give the great dogs to great owners that won't hurt them just people that will care for them great. And I would make them protected like an endangered species. Remember Rowdy? Well, he is not as little as he used to be. He now weighs 10 pounds and loves to run, play fetch, and bark at squirrels. Here's a picture of Rowdy on his most recent car trip to Atlanta. That's his favorite toy next to him.

Tim Tebow is one of the best college ball players ever. He won two championships and a heisman. He was drafted for the denver broncos they should be glad he is on the team.He was born in jacksonville FL.Lets see how he does.

Former Flordia QB drafted to denver. He won't make it. He's good and all but thats in college.NFL is not a good choice for tebow.Im a gator fan but he probley should have not signed but thats my opinion.

The EOD stands for explosive ordnance disposle. In the EOD you need a lot of training. You deal with bombs, explosives, missiles, and things like that. You will need a military degree. Its also one of the longer classes. The EOD is the job for me.

Beatiful Butterflies

Watz up our name is

Amber, jade, Garicia we decided to write this on the blog because we thought that we should tell you about our butterflies. We have been raising butterflies in our classroom. In the class we watched in the larva into the pupa and then the imago(adult).Then finally the beautiful butterfly. We waited about a week in a half . We were very excited . Every day we came to the back table and seen if they had hatched yet. Then one morning,we came into the room and we saw 4 little butterflies flying every where,going wild. But there was one that went into his/her cocoon late. Then on May 3,2010 it hatched. And it was a happy day for them.

Adrian and Fidels Track and Field Meet

We where in the sac and block relay. Fidel won 2nd and 3rd place for the sac relay. Adrian won 1st and 3rd in the sac relay, but none in block relay. Niether did Fidel. But it was off the chain. another kid got injured and had to get sent to the hospital from a broken arm . And one kid almost passed out because of dehydration. But it was still off the chain! It was real fun racing though me and Adrian were tired we liked racing. We needed to drink alot of water so we couldn't have dehydration.

And how your vocal chordes grow and you crack and sqeak alot.How you may start to grow more hair on your head and some under your armpits. Hurricanes!

This year we were fortunate and did not have any hurricanes effect us in Gainesville. Last year, two days of the first week of school were canceled because of Tropical Storm Fay.

Well we haven't updated as often as we planned, but for awhile there was nothing to tell. The beans took a few days to sprout, and some still haven't! Check out the pictures of the plants that have not only sprouted, but flourished!

These beans had all their needs met. They were watered and sat on the windowsill in the sun. Some of our beans are just beginning to grow.

Why do you think the beans are growing at different rates? Why do you think some have not even sprouted? If we planted new beans what could we do differently? Can't wait to hear from ya!

Plant Project- Day 1

Today we began growing bean plants. Half the class is growing lima beans planted in soil, and the other half is growing four pinto beans in wet paper towels. Here are some thoughts to consider:

- Will our plants grow indoors at 70 degrees? Should we put them outside where it is between 30-40 degrees?

- Our plants are not receiving any natural light (sunlight), will they still grow?

- How can you tell when to water your bean plant?

- Will the pinto beans grow, even though they are not planted in soil?

Winter Break

Winter break is almost here! Everybody jump and cheer!

That was my short winter poem. :) Over the upcoming break I hope that you all get a lot of rest and have fun with your families and friends. Remember to be reading your non-fiction book.

During winter break I will be camping on the Gulf of Mexico. I am excited to make smores, read my book, and go on hikes. Then I am going to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans to cheer on the Gators in Tim Tebow's last game. What are you doing over winter break?

The Lipsky Team recieved an email this morning from the official judges of the puppy naming contest, my parents. Read on to find out the puppy's name!

Dear Miss Lipsky and Miss Lipsky,

Thank you for helping us name our new puppy. Your classes are so creative and funny too.

We enjoyed reading the lists and found many of the names to be good possibilities for the puppy's name.

Some of the names were very "Gatory" and others were very yummy (Fudge, Cookie, Brownie, Cupcake).

So here is our decision (drum roll please).

It's a tie!

Yes, we found one name on the Stephen Foster list and one of the Chet's Creek list that combine to match our puppy's personality.

So his name is Rowdy Blackjack (who is asleep on my lap as I type this e-mail)!

Both classes win and both classes will be getting the prizes when they return from the Thanksgiving break.

Meet my parents' puppy, _______. That's right -- he doesn't have a name yet! :( . Are you ready for the surprise... drum roll please... you get to give this little puppy a great name. But wait! It's not that easy. My sister's 2nd grade class at Chet's Creek Elementary (a cool school in Jacksonville, FL) want to name him too. My parents are going to choose their favorite name, so make it a good one! The winning class will get to hang a framed photo of _______ in their classroom, a book about dogs to add to the classroom library, and maybe a tasty treat as well!

Climate change could cause the ice peaks on Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro to disappear within the next 25 years! Glaciologists, scientists who study glaciers, say the peaks might be ice-free as soon as 2022, or by 2033 at the latest. 85% of the ice that was present in 1912 has disappeared. Scientists are making similar findings all around the world. A rise in temperatures is one of the reasons for the ice melting, but also human-caused climate change that has made for drier and less cloudy conditions than in the past are also causing the ice to shrink. The picture shows a remnant of what once was an ice field.

Oh no! Frogs are going extinct!

Did you know that because of a certain fungus the Earth's population of frogs is facing extinction? Just like the dinosaurs, frogs may one day no longer exist. The fungus is called the chytrid fungus and feeds on keratin, which is a part of the skin that makes it sturdy and tough. Scientists believe that a third of the Earth's population of frogs may face extinction, and some species have already been wiped out. Currently there is no effective treatment for the fungus, but scientists are working hard to help the frogs.

Our first BINGO Luncheon!

Yesterday three students were invited to the first BINGO luncheon of the year for getting a BINGO on their reading cards. In Ms. Lipsky's class we have a Reading BINGO card where every square is a different genre, or type, of book. The three students that made it each read at least five books from different authors, and on different subjects. One student read four books that had won Newbery Awards! We ate lunch outside in the beautiful sunny, yet breezy weather and enjoyed orange and blue cupcakes. :) Will you be invited to the next BINGO Luncheon?

Recent Space Discovery

Last week scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) discovered a giant ring around Saturn. The ring is made up of ice and dust particles and is -316 degrees Fahrenheit. That's realllly cold! The ring starts about 3.7 million miles from Saturn, and extends another 7.4 million miles. "The newly found ring is so huge it would take 1 billion Earths to fill it," a JPL scientist said. No one had ever looked at Saturn with an infrared telescope until now, so they were never able to see it. The discovery of the "super-sized" ring may answer questions about Saturn's moons and their dark spots.

In the picture (which is an artist's interpretation of what the ring looks like) you can see the huge ring tilted around the planet Saturn. The inset (the picture in the circle) shows an enlarged Saturn.

If you've got some extra time on your hands you should watch some BrainPOPs at home! There is a BrainPOP movie for practically everything!

Here are a few that would be helpful for what we are working on in school:

1. Go to BrainPOP.
2. Sign in using the username and password I gave you.
3. Go to Math, click on Numbers and Operations and watch the movie on adding and subtracting fractions.
4. Try the quiz or activity for fun when you're done.
5. Go to English, click on Grammar, and watch the one on punctutation.
6. If you want, you can try the review quiz afterwards.
